A positive first camp experience
Campers age 6 through 8 (finished Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade) share Chico Camp, a pioneer log-cabin village sized for smaller folks. Few camps offer overnight camping for Chico-age children. Our program is fully supervised just for younger campers. The ratio of counselors to campers is 1:4. Mini-Chico sessions, half-weeks, are offered for this age group.
Four cabins make up Chico Hill. Each cabin sleeps 8 campers, with 2 counselors on the bottom floor. The huts have a clothesline for wet bathing suits and towels. The bathhouse is a short walk away from the huts, with a boy's side and a girl's side for co-ed camps. Weekly directors sleep in a hut by the campers to provide close adult supervision.
Some campers who are in 2nd grade turn nine years old during their year in school. These campers are Chico campers, due to the grade requirement. We do not move campers over to Mainside until they have finished 3rd grade. We do not make exceptions for this rule because we want each camper to have a positive camp experience.
Our Mini-Chico sessions take the fun of a full week of camp and shrink it down to 3 nights. We know many young campers are not quite ready for a full week away from home, this Mini-Chico week allows them to get their feet wet!
Super Chico Camps
Starting in 2015 we tried a new idea, Chicos are so much fun, we wanted an entire camp just for them. During the Super Chico Camps (July 6-9 and July 24-27) there are no older campers at Winnataska. The Chicos become the center of attention. We maintain the 1:4 ratio but with no older campers every activity is geared toward the younger camper. These sessions are a great way to introduce camp to a new camper. Hope to see you there!
