Young Teen Asthma Camp for
teens ages 12-15, will be held June 2-5, 2008.
The Young Teen Asthma Camp is held annually at Camp Winnataska in June
to
provide a positive experience in the outdoors coupled with developmentally
appropriate asthma education. Asthma education is provided by nurses
and
nurse practitioners using "Power Breathing for TeensÔ" developed
by the
Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Daily peak flow readings are
done
and campers were encouraged to adopt an individualized asthma action
plan.
The camp is a member of the national Consortium of Children's Asthma
Camps.
Camper response has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic. Campers participate
in all aspects of camp - swimming, canoes, horses, ropes, crafts and
games
without increased difficulty. Campers participate in a smoke-free Indian
Night and Country Night dances. Camp Winnataska staff supervise the program
and provide leadership in the residential huts. Parents report increased
knowledge and self-care in their teens. Camper's comments from beginning
to
end of camp demonstrated marked positive change in attitudes about asthma.
The camp is co-sponsored by Dr. Gustavo Dubois, M.D., of Pulmonary Medicine
Associates, P.C. with camperships donated by Pulmonary Medicine Institute
of
Alabama, St. Vincent's Hospital, Mississippi State Alumni Chapter of
Birmingham, AstraZeneca pharmaceutical company and individual donations.
The camp for 2008 is scheduled for June 2-5. Donations for camperships
in
the amount of $195 are welcomed and may be sent to Friends of Winnataska,
Inc, P.O. Box 59514, Birmingham, AL, 35259. If you know a teen ages 12-15
with asthma who you think would benefit from the camp, please forward
the
name and address to Dr. Buckner by phone at (205) 934-6799 or e-mail
at
