Choctaw Hut Songs

By Jeannie Little:

Well, since my parents left me (uh)
I found a new place to dwell (uh)
It's out at Winnataska and I
Love it so well, oh baby
Choctaw is so homely baby
Choctaw is so homely baby
Choctaw is so homely, I could sigh (AHHHHHH)

We are the Choctaw girls
We wear our hair in curls
We wear our dungarees
To hide our dirty knees
We wear our daddy's shirts,
We are the biggest flirts,
For we are the Choctaw girls.

We are the Choctaws, Choctaws are we.
We never lose our pepability, rah rah rah
You do your best and we'll do the rest
Right on to victory, Hey!

Group 1 Group 2
Oh no Don't say nothin' bad about the Choctaws

Oh no Don't say nothin' bad about the Choctaws

We love 'em so Don’t say nothin' bad about the Choctaws

Oh don't you know Don’t say nothin' bad about the Choctaws

We're gonna win We're gonna win

That Honor Hut That Honor Hut

Well all right, well all right, well all right, wooooo!

Listen my children and you shall hear.
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere
Going up the allyes and down the streets
Yelling Choctaw, Choctaw can't be beat.

Chorus:

Ladeda - those Choctaws are the best
Ladeda - the best of all the rest
Ladeda - those Choctaws are the best
Ladeda, ladeda, ladeda, hey, hey!

Eenie meenie miney moe,
What's the best hut that we know

Chorus

Are we in it? No we're not!
We're not in it, we're on top!

Chorus

Choctaw's gonna shine tonight
Choctaw's gonna shine.;
Choctaw's gonna shine tonight
Won't that be fine - hey!
Choctaw's gonna shine tonight
Choctaw's gonna shine
When the sun goes down
And the moon comes up
Choctaw's gonna shine.
S-H-I-N-E--Shoe polish.;

Tune: "If They Could See Us Now"

If they could see us now
In this old Choctaw hut
They'd want to come along
And join the good times, but
Those Choctaw girls are the cream of the crop
They try to slow us down, but we never will stop.

We like to ride and hike, swim and boat and play,
We have more fun and laughs all the live long day.
So gather round for that Choctaw fun
If my friends could see me
They'd wish they could be me
In this great, great Choctaw hut.
So eat your heart out, da, da, da, da.
Choctaws, we love you,
We really mean it, da, da, da, da.
Choctaws, we love you.

C - that's the way it begins
H - shines the second letter in
O - I am the third letter
C - I'm the fourth letter in that word
Oh T - I'm filling in
A - I'm near the end
Oh C-H-O-C-T-A-W
That's the way you spell Choctaw.

Oh, Rucus, Rackus, Johnson Brown
What you gonna do when the rent comes round?
What you gonna say?
What you gonna pay?
What you gonna do on the judgment day?
Oh, you know, I know rent takes dough.
Landlord put you out in the snow.
Oh, Rucus, Rackus, Johnson, Brown.
What you gonna do when the rent comes round?

Tune: "Give Me One Dozen Roses"

Give us two dozen campers
And four or five good leaders,
And put them in the Choctaw hut;
They'll be glad to be up there
And live out in the fresh air--
Up there in the Choctaw hut.
There will be other campers later,
After we've gone,
To uphold the reputation
Of the Choctaws' having fun;
Give us two dozen campers
And four or five good leaders,
And put them in the Choctaw hut!

I'm goin' to heav'n;
When I get to heav'n
I'm gonna look around and see;
Gonna look around, look around and see
If there's room for a Choctaw like me.

(3 part round)

When I arrive there on that judgment day,
Choctaw, Choctaw heav'n;
Glory Hallelujah, come right on in to stay
'Cause this is Choctaw, Choctaw heav'n.

I went to heav'n;
When I got to heav'n
St. Peter came walkin' up to me;
" Always got room for a Choctaw," says he,
" For a good tribe member like thee."

(3 part round)

There is an Indian head sproutin' on a cloud,
Choctaw, Choctaw heav'n;
On it is written, "Let in that Choctaw crowd,
'Cause this is Choctaw, Choctaw heav'n."

I went to heav'n;
When I got to heav'n
St. Peter came walkin' up to me;
" Always got room for a Choctaw," says he,
" For a good tribe member like thee."

(3 part round)

Tune: "Caisson Song"

Over hill, over plain, you can hear a loud refrain
As those Choctaws go rolling along;
Up and down, in and out, you can hear a mighty shout
As those Choctaws go rolling along;
So it's hi, hi, hee, on to victory;
Shout out your praises lound and strong - YEA CHOCTAW!
And where'er you go you will always know
That those Choctaws are rolling along;
Keep 'em rolling as those Choctaws go rolling along!

The peppiest pep I ever saw,
That ever came a pokin';
If I were to tell you how peppy it was,
You'd think I was a-jokin;!
It's not the pep of the pepper pod,
Or the pep of the popcorn popper;
It's not the pep of the mustard jar,
Or the pep of the vinegar stopper;
It's good old-fashioned P-E-P,
The pep that you can't down;
The Choctaw pep, the Choctaw pep,
The peppiest pep around!

Tune: "I'm a Tex"

We're the Choctaw tribe and the very, very best;
If you don't think so, you can put us to the test;
Since we can't think of more, we will end it right here.
But come on, you girls, let's give a cheer;
YEA CHOCTAW!

Tune: "Sixteen Tons"

Some people say Choctaw's not so fine,
According to us they're just sublime,
Take sixteen girls multiply by two,
And that's the cabin made for you.

Chorus:
Oh yea Choctaw's best we all agree,
The best in this whole camp you see,
They all know it, so do we,
If you don't believe it come and see.

We all like ________ (person who blows Reveille) she's okay,
We all hope she's here to stay,
There's only one thing wrong we all agree,
Why must she blow Reveille.

Chorus

You all know it, it's a fact,
We like our men with feet of black,
We like our man by the name of ______ (pick a Blackfoot)
He gives us oh such good advice.;

Chorus

Choctaw's Theme
Written by Dianne Jacques
Tune: "Arthur's Theme" (I think)

Once in your life you find that
Spirit of Winnataska
Love and the friendship woven
Through every one
You wake up and it's still with you
Even when you leave the camp behind
Those friendships that we've made here
Will linger on

Chorus

What is it like to live at Winnataska
Where every girl shares a smile
A place where christian love
Grows ever stronger
You know you've found someone
You know you've found someone
Who really cares

Beautiful falls around us
Hillside with the creek below
All of this together
Has helped us grow
Choctaw girls have seen this beauty
In the love of God around
Now we're trying to show you
All we've found.

Repeat Chorus

Follow the spirit of Choctaw
Follow to where our love grows
Follow the sounds of our laughter

Where each girl shares part of herself
Her dreams, loves, and talents are shared
Through friendships old and new

Follow over the hillside
Follow the stream as it flows
Follow overgrown pathways
Follow to Choctaw, our home.

Tune: "Both Sides Now"
2nd Girls, 1974
by Zolinda Zbinden

Choctaw is our kind of place
A smile of love is on each face
Friendship shared with everyone
Increase our camping fun

The surroundings mean so much to all
The great blue skys
The water falls
Nature shows that God is real
His presence we can feel

Camp living stirs the hears of all
The memories cause us to stand tall
The pride of doing our best
No matter what the test.

Leaving always makes us sad
But we'll remember times we had
The times of fun and sad times too
We'll share our whole lives through.

Choctaw
1st Girls, 1977
Tune: "Here Comes the Sun"

Here in Choctaw we've found a special love among us.
Here in Choctaw it seems this love will never fail.

Chorus:
Here comes that love
Dute in do do
That Choctaw love and we feel it's
All right.

This summer our hearts were joined by faith and friendship.
This summer it seems like smiles will never leave.

Chorus

Can you feel it.
We want to share our love with others.
We know you feel it.
It's burning brighter every day.

Chorus

3rd Girls, 1978
Tune: "These Dreams"

Fourteen young faces, fourteen different girls,
Fourteen different personalities, fourteen different worlds.
But since the first day we've learned
That loving is what camp is all about.

Chorus:

What brought us together?
Choctaw the place that we call home.
We have come to love this place and the good times spent in Choctaw
Will last all of our lives
Hum, hum, hum
Oh we love you so.

Camping out at Winnwood, Red Kelly made us all hold tight and
This hold will never let go,
We've felt it since that night.
It's strenghtend by the happy times and love we share each night.

Chorus (repeating last line.)

Tune: "This Old Guitar"
2nd Girls, 1976
Jill Sidwell
Jill Coheen
Susan Shields

As a piece of clay our lives took shape and form.
We opened up our hearts to the Master's hand.
The plan He had for us came true through Choctaw faith.
His affection worked to smooth our ruffian ways.
What care He took to smooth our ruffian ways.

With His design He molds our inner beauty.
His patience matures our youthful ways.
The potter loves his finished piece as much as God loves us.
Perfection is the goal of each one's work.
Perfection is the goal of each one's work.

We realize that God has brought us here together.
He is the potter we're the clay.
We may be yet unfinished but in time we'll understand
As His instruments He'll use us in some way (repeat)
In Choctaw He'll use us in some way (repeat)

And when you make a Choctaw friend
The chain of love you will begin,
And when you make a Choctaw friend
The chain of love you will begin
Choctaw life (Choctaw life)
Choctaw joy (Choctaw joy)
Choctaw dreams (Choctaw dreams)
Choctaw love (Choctaw love)

We'll never pass this way again
But memories will linger within
Reflections of our Choctaw faith
Deep in our hearts the chain we'll keep safe
We'll keep safe

Repeat chorus.

We'll strive to laught and love as He would know.

Simple, pure and boundless like the sky,
Choctaw love grows stronger and we
Know not why.

It's time to move on
With truthful friendships now
Engraved upon our hearts

We'll forever hold them dear as time
Moves on, until our Father guides us
Back we now depart.

Chorus

Tune: "Who Will Buy This Wonderful Morning" from "Oliver"
1st Girls, 1971
Pam Overton

When we came to Choctaw this summer
Friends we found and fresh air so clear,
Beauty all in nature around us,
The spirit and traditions dear.
(descant - Choc Taw, Choc Taw)
God in His great wisdom created
Nature's world for us to adore.
Now we live each day with excitement
And we're aware of so much more.

All too short our days here in Choctaw,
But we've grown in body and mind.
(descant stop)
We can take a part of camp with us
The fact that God above
Has given us His love
Will stay with us our whole life through.
(on through begin descant again)
Choc-taw, Choc-taw
Choc-Choc-taw.

Tune: "Delta Dawn"
1st Girls, 1974
Michelle Johnson

Choctaw hut, we're the best hut in the Camp.
Our hut is filled with spirit, pride and joy.
We love to sing and play
Through every single day.
Honor Hut is what we're always striving for.

Indian night, Gallilean, Holy Grail,
These are a few of our favorite nights.
We love the pine trees tall
And hillside o'er the falls
And Wayside Cross on Sunday in the woods.

In Choctaw hut, we have made lots of new friends,
With whom we share the good and bad.
This Christian love we've found
We'll pass it all around
To everyone we know and love back home.

Choctaw hut, we're the best hut in the camp.
Our hut is filled with spirit, pride and joy.
And when we leave for home
We will not cry and moan,
We'll remember all our days in Choctaw hut.
(slowly) We'll remember all our days in Choctaw hut.

Tune: "Starry, Starry Night" or "Vincent"
Celia McGilvary
Sally Truss
Renee Berthon

Choctaw hut, our friend,
We've come out here to live again.
Happy days come to an end
As evening shadows steal across the sky.

Sunlight through the trees,
Our laughter joins the summer breeze.
Choctaw campers strive to please
By showing Christian love in all we do.

Chorus:

And now we realize
That friendship is a precious thing.
Choctaw memories will be echoing
As we go on our way.;
Winnataska, we would love to stay,
But we must leave someday.

While singing our hut songs,
We feel in Choctaw we belong.
Bonds between us will hold strong
In all our happy hours of work and play.

Hillside waters flow,
Traditions we have come to know
Fellowship began to grow
As each girl shared her talents and her dreams.

Chorus again.

Repeat last two lines of chorus.

Tune: "Too Much Heaven on Their Minds" from Superstar
4th Girls, 1973

Listen leaders, I don't like what I see.
Tell me why they won't listen to me.
Is the reason
That our P.M.A.'s not up to par?
With a hut of ______ (number of campers)
I can't believe we'll stay alive
And I think this time they've gone too far!

Without water when the whole camp complained
Choctaws saw that the spirit remained.
While the Blackfeet stayed up late at night to pull us through
Special leaders had a scheme,
But Comanches so it seemed
Had the wit to win out in the end.

Chorus:

People argue, if you must
Choctaws never make a fuss.
With our bond of closeness here
Why should we fight?
We have all the happiness
All the joy one can possess.
Since we've been a Choctaw girl
We've seen the light.;

Listen leaders, now I like what I see,
Choctaw love has been given to me.
And the spirit that Winnataska campers seldom find.
For the feeling in our hearts,
Is that which never will depart,
And our Choctaw love will carry on.

Tune: "His Love is Warmer Than the Warmest Sunshine
2nd Girls, 1973
Debbie Boucher
Cindy Caheen

It's nice to know that there's a place where we all belong.
A place where love is growing all around.
The joy we share is all we need to keep us going strong.
In Choctaw, friendship is what we found.

Chorus:

Yes, there's a special love that shines in the face of each and every girl.
We've learned that happiness is part of what we call our Choctaw world.
The warmth of fellowship brings smiles to our faces with each passing day,
For Choctaws that special love has come our way.

God is near to everyone, it shows in all we do.
The wonders of His world are plain to see.
Concern for others is the way that He wants us to live
In Choctaw our dreams were meant to be.

Tune: "One Tin Soldier" Theme from "Billy Jack"
1st Girls, 1972

Choctaw's came to Winnataska
Looking for that special dream
Hopes of finding camp's true spirit
Searching always, so it seemed.

In the days we shared the sunlight
Night brought bonds of faith and trust
These were part of Choctaw's spirit
Always being fair and just.

Chorus:

Choctaws know the secret
To that special dream
Dear to every camper
It shows what Choctaw means.
Its joy of friendship growing
In the heart of every girl and the memories she will cherish always
Choctaw love will carry on.

We'll remember days in Choctaw
Times of joys and times of tears
These will bring us even closer
To the feelings we hold dear.

Tune: "In the Early Morning Rain"
3rd Girls, 1970

In the early morning sun
We wake to sounds of reveille
Thinking what it means to be
In Choctaw, number on.e

As we come to camp each year
Knowing we're the best hut here
This time we all are glad
We're making Choctaw number one.

Holy Grail and Indian Night
Oh, what such inspiring sights
This and more we'll hold so dear
As we return next year

But when we leave this camp we know
That our love will every grow
Because friendships will go on
As forever we'll be one.
As forever we'll be one.

Tune: "Jean"
1st Girls, 197__

Choctaw, the heart of us all
Is in Camp Winnataska.
The love is so real,
You can touch it and feel
The purpose of God above.

Choctaw, friends old and new
We've shared good times and bad.
The spirit we've found
We'll spread all around,
Forever with us to stay.

When times come to go
We'll always know that the love
That we found here,
Will always be dear.
And the memories will linger,
We'll always remember.

Repeat first verse.
