Benefits of Physical Activity at Camp

Dear Winnataska Families,

As we prepare for another wonderful summer, we’re excited to share how camp promotes physical growth—not just through outdoor activities but through the unique experience of living and playing in community.

At camp, children experience the powerful benefits of physical activity in nature—whether hiking, swimming, or exploring the great outdoors. These activities strengthen the body, build mental resilience, and foster a lifelong appreciation for movement. What makes camp truly special is how physical activity is woven into community life. Campers form friendships through shared experiences, learning to connect with others in ways they might not at home. One of camp’s greatest lessons is finding common ground, united by a love for camp and faith in God. As Matthew 18:20 reminds us, “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

Beyond the physical benefits, camp nurtures a sense of adventure and courage. Whether conquering a climbing wall or getting on a horse for the first time, campers grow in confidence and strength. These moments aren’t just about individual achievement—they’re about learning to trust and support one another. As Joshua 1:9 encourages, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid... for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Camp is the perfect place to put this verse into action—finding courage in new challenges and encouraging others to do the same.

Camp isn’t just about sports or structured activities—it’s about stepping outside comfort zones, embracing adventure, and developing resilience. As former Disney CEO Michael Eisner wrote in Camp, “At camp, you don't need screens. There's the forest, the mountains, the river—everything you need to stay busy and engaged.” This focus on outdoor play is more important than ever. In The Anxious Generation, Jonathan Haidt discusses how today’s children often miss out on the independence, problem-solving, and confidence that come from unstructured outdoor play. Camp provides a space where these essential life skills can thrive.

We’re grateful to partner with you in your child’s growth. Thank you for trusting us with their journey this summer—we can’t wait to see them thrive in mind, body, and spirit!

Looking forward to seeing you at our upcoming Open Houses! If you’re new to camp or just want to visit, mark your calendar for April 6 and May 18. These events are a great way for kids to get familiar with camp and feel ready for summer.

Faithfully,
Elin Glenn
