Getting Ready for Camp

Tips from Camp Director, Caitlin Thorington

Camp is a place full of firsts—first time away from home, first time climbing a high ropes course, first time meeting new friends outside of school, first time making a bed, and first time handling morning and bedtime routines on their own.

With all these firsts comes a big focus on independence. You might be wondering, How do I help my child get ready for camp? Here are some simple ways to set them up for success before they even pack their bags!

Get Used to Doing Things on Your Own

Help your child get comfortable with everyday tasks like making their bed, putting their things away, and keeping their space organized. The more they practice now, the easier their daily routine at camp will be.

Get Moving

Camp days are active! Help your child get used to being on the go by playing outside, taking family walks, or even having a living room dance party. Anything that gets them up and moving will help!

Try New Challenges Together

Encourage your child to tackle a new outdoor challenge before camp—maybe a longer hike or a climbing wall. Getting through something tough now will boost their confidence for all the fun, adventurous activities ahead.

Have the Right Gear

Make sure they have the right shoes and clothes, plus a solid water bottle to help them stay hydrated. Being prepared with the right gear makes camp life a whole lot easier!

Take a Break from Screens

Camp is all about real-life adventure, not screen time. Help your child ease into this by spending more time outdoors now—reading outside, going on short hikes, or just playing in the backyard. The less screen-dependent they are, the more they’ll enjoy camp.

Make It About Fun

Remind your camper that staying active at camp isn’t about being the best—it’s about having fun! Whether they’re swimming, hiking, or playing games, the goal is to enjoy being outside and trying new things.

A little preparation now will go a long way in making their camp experience awesome. We can’t wait to see them this summer!
