Mental Growth at Camp

Dear Winnataska Parents,

As we start a new year, I’m excited to share how Camp Winnataska helps kids grow in amazing ways. Mental growth—building resilience, independence, leadership, and curiosity—is one of the core values we focus on at camp, all within the framework of the “Four-Fold Life.”

At Winnataska, campers learn to face challenges and explore new ideas in a supportive, screen-free environment. They develop independence by solving problems and making decisions on their own, which boosts their confidence. Leadership comes from stepping up, working with others, and serving their community. And curiosity helps them ask questions, find solutions, and discover the joy of learning. These are skills they’ll use long after camp is over.

Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:16—“Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven”—perfectly describe what happens at camp. Kids are encouraged to let their unique light shine, inspiring those around them while growing into who they’re meant to be.

One of the biggest benefits of camp is stepping away from screens. It’s easy to rely on technology, but it doesn’t teach problem-solving or help kids connect with others in meaningful ways. At camp, they unplug and dive into real-life experiences—building relationships, exploring nature, and gaining confidence. As Jonathan Haidt puts it in The Anxious Generation, “Children develop best when they are allowed to face age-appropriate risks and challenges.” Winnataska provides the perfect place for this to happen.

If you’re new to camp or just want to visit, mark your calendar for our open houses on April 6 and May 18. These events are a great way for kids to get familiar with camp and feel ready for summer.

Thank you for being part of the Winnataska family. Together, we’re fostering independence, resilience, and a love of learning that will last a lifetime.

Faithfully,
Elin
